Principal - Larry Walker
Hello, I appreciate the trust you have shown in allowing me to be a part of your child’s educational experience in Gilmer County. I am a native of Gilmer County and believe that small town folks can do big time things. My commitment is to broaden the possibilities for your child and to help them be the best that they can be! I have two girls, Mary Elizabeth and Hannah, who are both enrolled in Gilmer County Schools. I would encourage each of you to be as active as you can in your child’s education. Tomorrow’s leaders are built today in our schools!! The faculty and staff of Gilmer Middle School are all dedicated to producing life-long learners. I am looking forward to continuing to work towards helping the children of Gilmer County achieve their goals dreams. Thanks!!

Mr. Larry Walker - Principal

April Smith - Assistant Principal

Hi!  My name is April Smith, and I am an Assistant Principal at Gilmer Middle School.

I am proud to be a product of Gilmer County Schools!  I graduated from Gilmer High School in 1986. I earned my B.S. and Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from North Georgia College and State University.  My EdS is also in Early Childhood Education from West Georgia College.  My School Leadership Degree is from North Georgia College and State University.   This will be my 23rd year in the Gilmer County School System.

The majority of my teaching and learning career was in first grade, at Ellijay Primary and Mountain View Elementary Schools.  I taught 1st grade for 10 years.  I also taught a Kindergarten-1st grade loop for 4 years.  My last year teaching was in 3rd grade at Mountain View Elementary School.  I became the Assistant Principal of Ellijay Elementary School in 2005.  The 2012-13 School year will be my 2nd year at Gilmer Middle School!  All of the schools I have been blessed to work at have been fabulous schools, full of wonderful students and staff!  I know that Gilmer County is a wonderful place to live and work!

I have been married to Jim Smith for 22 years.  We have two children, Jenna and Harrison.  My daughter Jenna just graduated from Gilmer High School in May 2012.  She will be moving to Rome, Georgia in the Fall.  My son Harrison is going to be a Freshman at Gilmer High School in the fall.  He is on the Gilmer County Swim team and wrestles.
Gilmer Middle School consists of grades 5 and 6 only!  What a great set up with students being our focus!  Students here get the best of both worlds.  Students still get the upper elementary focus with hands on learning and yet also the best taste of the experiences that Clear Creek Middle School will offer as they grow into a mature teen!  I know as a parent, and an administrator, these students are getting just a little bit longer before they have to grow up so quickly!  That in itself is a bit of a relief!

If you would like to contact me or your child's teacher to set up a conference, please feel free to call GMS at 276-5030.   We would like to hear from you!  Please keep in mind that GMS protects your child's instructional time by ensuring that the instructional day is uninterrupted with phone calls, announcements, and other non-emergency situations.   The best time to schedule a conference or a phone call with your child's teacher is during the grade level planning time.  5th grade teachers planning time is from 9:25 - 10:25, and 6th grade teachers planning time is from 8:05 - 9:25 each day. Please leave a message with the front office staff to have your call returned.  Electronic communication can be made by using the www.gilmerschools.com link.    We look forward to serving you and your children!
